Odoo Data Migration & Cutover Planning
Move usable business records into Odoo with clear ownership and evidence that the result reconciles.
What is Odoo data migration?
Odoo migration moves agreed master data, opening balances and operational records into a target environment. It can also involve changing Odoo versions or hosting. Mapping, cleanup, trial imports and reconciliation establish whether the business can operate correctly; copying a spreadsheet alone does not.
Decide what moves and what remains an archive
Begin with day-one workflows. Customers, suppliers, products, units, prices, stock and open orders may be essential. History has different business and retention requirements. Confirm access to old records with accounting and business owners rather than importing everything by default.
| Data | Check | Owner |
|---|---|---|
| Products | Identifiers, units and categories | Product lead |
| Stock | Quantities, locations and valuation | Inventory and finance |
| Open transactions | Balances, status and relationships | Sales, purchasing and finance |
Rehearse before production cutover
Inventory files and integrations, agree mappings, clean duplicates and load a sample. Expand after users validate records and exceptions. Rehearse a full migration with counts and reconciliations. Freeze or reconcile changes during cutover; preserve source backups and define a rollback decision point.
What affects effort and acceptance?
Source quality, historical depth, attachments, custom fields, multi-company rules and upgrade compatibility drive effort. Integrations may require their own migration. The scope should include a mapping workbook, owners, tests and a cutover plan. Business owners must verify order-to-cash and purchase-to-receipt examples, with finance reviewing balances and inventory valuation.
Prepare before requesting a proposal
Bring source system versions, export examples, approximate record counts and historical-access needs. Identify the team available for cleanup and acceptance. Keep import logs and assign owners to unresolved exceptions. A project date should follow dependency review, not be inferred solely from the number of records.
Questions before you start
Can we migrate spreadsheets?
Yes, subject to source quality and target mappings. Review a sample to establish cleanup effort before a quote.
Should all history move?
Not necessarily. Agree which records are operationally required and how older records remain accessible under retention requirements.
